AND HAVING WORKED FOR THEM, I THOUGHT THAT I KNEW EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
SO I WENT DOWN TO SEE OLD GRANDPA, AND I SAID, GRANDPA, WHAT DO YOU SAY THAT I TAKE A FULL-TIME JOB WITH YOU HERE AND LEARN THE TRADE AND HAVE A FUTURE IN THE AWNING BUSINESS.
AND HE SAID MAXWELL, THERE IS NO FUTURE IN THIS BUSINESS.
NONE WHATEVER, AND THE MARKET IS GONE, AND YOU HAVE GOT A COLLEGE EDUCATION.
AND GO OUT THERE AND FIND A GOOD JOB AND GET ON WITH LIFE.
AND I DISAGREED WILLMAR.
WITH HIM, AND ISAID I THINK THEE HERE, AND HE STOOD HIS GROUND, AND HE TOLD ME IF I THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA I OUGHT TO GO OUT AND START MY OWN AWNING COMPANY.

YOU GO INTO BUSINESS BECAUSE YOU WANT TO DO IT, AND YOU FEEL IT, AND I AM NOT TRYING TO BE THEATRICAL HERE, I MEAN IT, YOU HAVE TO JUST WANT TO SUCCEED AT OWNING, STARTING AND RUNNING AND OWNING A SMALL BUSINESS.
AND IT TAKES SOMETHING MORE THAN JUST A GREAT IDEA.
IT TAKES MORE THAN JUST A GREAT DEAL OF WORKING CAPITAL.
AND IT TAKES MORE THAN JUST LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.
AND IT TAKES A FIRE IN YOUR STOMACH, A REAL DESIRE.
WHAT WE HAVE AND WHAT WE MANUFACTURE HERE IS NOT A GREAT TECHNICAL STYLE.
THERE IS A TECHNIQUE TO IT, BUT IT IS RAW MATERIALS MANUFACTURING.
WE DO START WITH CLOTH ON A BOLT, AND STEEL IN THE LENGTH FORMS AND VARIOUS COMPONENTS AND FITTINGS, AND TAKE THOSE MATERIALS, AND DESIGN A PRODUCT FOR THEM, AND CUT THEM, ASSEMBLE THEM, AND MAKE A FINISHED PRODUCT.
TO ME, THAT'S VERY EXCITING.
I USE TO BE NUTS AND BOLTS, AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HONEST WITH ME AND SAID MAX WHEN YOU COME DOWN THE WHOLE PLACE IS, WHEN YOU COME IN, WE GET FIRED UP.
LOOK, WE HAVE GOT TO TALK, AND WE CAN'T [BLEEP] ON THIS THING.
WE HAVE GOT TO GET SARATOGA DONE.

I'VE BEEN FORTUNATE IN THE PEOPLE THAT WORK FOR THE COMPANY, THE PEOPLE ATTRACTED TO THE COMPANY, ARE CAPABLE OF ACCEPTING NEW RESPONSIBILITY, AND IN FACT, WELCOME TO WITH OPEN ARMS.
WE FAILED.
I MEAN, YOU KNOW, THERE ARE TIMES, AND I KNOW, AND WE CANNOT SAY THAT WE DO IT 100% AND WE DON'T HAVE SOMEBODY OUT THERE WHO SAYS, OTTER CREEK, I WOULD NOT BUY FOR THEM FOR THE LAST THING IN THE WORLD.
I AM SURE THAT WE MADE OUR MISTAKES.
BUT I KNOW THAT IF I STAY ALERT, AND REMEMBER WHAT I HAVE DONE, THAT I WON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN.
AND THROUGH THAT MISTAKE, AND REALLY AT THAT POINT, IT'S NOT FAIR TO CALL IT A MISTAKE, LEARNING A SITUATION, IS REALLY WHAT IT BECOMES, AND THROUGH THAT LEARNING SITUATION, WE WILL CREATE A BETTER PRODUCT, A BETTER SERVICE, AND A BETTER COMPANY.
IF I LOST IT ALL TODAY, I WOULD BE BACK IN BUSINESS TOMORROW MORNING.
AND I WOULD PROBABLY HAVE, IF I NEEDED TO, THE BEST, HIGHEST QUALITY WINDOW WASHING BUSINESS IN THE STATE OF VERMONT.
I WOULD DO WHATEVER IT TOOK.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO ANYTHING AT ALL, IF YOU ARE GOING TO ENJOY LIFE, AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE LIVING IT, TO THE FULLEST, YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE RISKS.
EVERY DAY, EVERY MINUTE.
>> MOST OF OUR BOOKS GO INTO LIBRARIES AND COLLECTIONS, WORKING COLLECTIONS, VARIOUS ART HISTORIANS AND OTHER PEOPLE.
AND THERE ARE BOOKS THAT ARE GOING TO BE REFERRED TO OVER A VERY LONG PERIOD OF TIME, SO IN THAT ACCEPTS THEY ENDURE BECAUSE OF THE NATURE AND BECAUSE OF THE WAY THAT WE MAKE THEM.
>> I KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PRINTING TO KNOW THAT I WAS NOT ONE OF THE GREAT MONEY-MAKING ACTIVITIES OF THE WORLD.
THEREFORE, THE POTENTIAL IS, IS LIMITED.
AS FAR AS ACCUMULATING A LOT OF CASH.
HOWEVER, THE POTENTIAL FOR HAVING A FASCINATING AND INTERESTING LIFE, IT IS TREMENDOUS.
ONE TIME I WAS COMPLAINING, FOR INSTANCE, TO ONE OF MY SONS, AND I SAID MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE REALLY GONE OUT AND GOTTEN MYSELF A REAL JOB SOMEWHERE, YOU KNOW, AND REALLY, REALLY MADE SOME MONEY.
THE WORLD MEASURES SUCCESS BY MONEY.
AND HE SAID TO ME, WAIT A MINUTE, DAD, HE SAID, IF YOU'D BEEN INTERESTED IN MAKING MONEY, YOU WOULD HAVE MADE MONEY.
YOU WEREN'T.
YOU WERE INTERESTED IN SOMETHING ELSE.
AND YOU MADE THAT.
I NEVER KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT BUSINESS.
I AM NOT A BUSINESSMAN.
I FEEL THAT PROBABLY TO THIS DAY, BUT I HAVE HAD A TERRIFIC TIME DOING WHAT I WANTED TO DO, SO I HAVE NO REGRETS.
TO ME, THIS IS THE CENTER OF THE GRAPHIC ARTS WORLD, AND MY ADVISERS AND THE BANKING PEOPLE I WAS WORKING WITH SAID, YOU KNOW, LUNENBERG IS NOT THE IDEAL PLACE FOR CONDUCTING A BUSINESS, WHICH YOU SEEM TO HAVE IN MIND.
AND WE REALLY ADVISE YOU TO MOVE TO SOMEWHERE, WHERE THINGS ARE, WILL WORK A LOT EASIER FOR YOU.
BUT, I AM A VERY CONSISTENT AND PERSISTENT PERSON.
A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THAT I AM KIND OF STUBBORN, BUT I DON'T GO ALONG WITH THAT.
>> OF COURSE, IT'S THE WRONG PLACE.
BUT I BELIEVE AS ROBERT FROST HAS SAID, SOMETIMES THE ROAD LEAST TRAVELED ON IS THE MOST INTERESTING ONE TO TAKE.
SO THAT SPURRED US TO THINK POSITIVELY ABOUT THIS THING, AND TO FIND OUT HOW OUR LOCATION COULD WORK FOR US, AND I THINK THAT WE'VE BEEN RELATIVELY SUCCESSFUL.
JUST BY BEING HERE, WE HAVE A DISTINCTION.
BECAUSE IF WE WERE IN BOSTON, AND/OR NEW YORK OR SOMETHING, NOBODY WOULD -- THAT QUESTION WOULD NEVER RISE BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE AN OBVIOUS PLACE, BUT A QUESTION AND ARISE, SO RIGHT AWAY, IT PEAK'S PEOPLE'S INTEREST IN US, AND IT GIVES US A LITTLE DISTINCTION, QUALITY IS SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE PAYS LIP SERVICE TO, BUT YOU HAVE TO GO TO A STEP BEYOND QUALITY.
YOU HAVE TO GET SOMETHING JUST A BIT BETTER OR PERCEIVED AS BETTER, AND THAN ANYONE ELSE, AND WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT BECAUSE WE ALWAYS STRETCH THE TECHNOLOGY, WHATEVER IT IS, WE ARE USING, WHATEVER TECHNIQUES, AND WHATEVER THE PROCESS IS, WE ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH IT UNTIL WE HAVE GONE BEYOND WHAT HE SAYS CAN BE DONE.
THIS DOES NOT COMFORT ME, RISK DOES.
AND THAT'S ALL.
SOME PEOPLE ARE BUILT THAT WAY AND OTHERS ARE NOT.
AND MAYBE THAT'S WHAT ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS.
MAYBE YOU ARE NOT TRAINED TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR, MAYBE YOU ARE JUST BORN TO BE ONE.
>> WHETHER ENTREPRENEURS ARE BORN OR TRAINED, REMAINS A CONTROVERSY.
EVEN AMONGST THE EXPERTS WHO WORK WITH THEM.
ON ANOTHER ISSUE THERE IS MORE AGREEMENT.
ENTREPRENEUR'S PASSION OFTEN GIVES THEM A SENSE OF MISSION ABOUT THEIR BUSINESSES.
AND JACKY KOFMAN AND RANDY HACKER FOUNDED A MAGAZINE WITH AN AMBITIOUS MISSION.

THE MISSION STATEMENT OF THE MAGAZINE IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THAT.

WE FLEW WE COULD NO -- WE KNEW E COULD NOT DO ONE IN NEW YORK, WHICH WAS THE ANTI-CHRIST OF ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE EVERYWHERE YOU GO PEOPLE ARE BERECEINE-- BESEECHINGYOU TO BU.
WE WERE DRIVING UP HERE TO VISIT OUR DIRECTOR, AND SOMEWHERE ALONG ROUTE 100 WE REALIZED THIS IS WHERE WE HAVE TO DO P3.

TO HELP TO MITIGATE THOSE THINGS.

OUR FINANCIAL SITUATION IS NOT ONE WHICH WOULD ENABLE US TO HAVE A PAYROLL AT THIS TIME.
I CRY, I CRY A LOT, RISK CAN BE A REAL DRAG.
AS EXCITING AND CHALLENGING AS IT IS, THERE IS THE FLIP SIDE, THERE IS A LOT OF FEAR AND SHAKING AND A LOT OF EARLY MORNING STOMACHACHES, AND NO ONE EVER SAID IT WOULD BE EASY.
THAT'S THE CLICHE, AND IT'S THE REALITY.
IT'S NOT EASY TO PURSUE YOUR DREAM.

CHRIS PAGE, THE DIRECTOR OF THE ORGANIZATION, HAD DECIDED TO TAKE A NEW APPROACH TO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND RATHER THAN JUST GO OUT AND TRY TO, TRY TO QUOTE BUSINESSES.
HE DECIDED THEY WOULD LOOK AT THE AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES IN THE REGION AND SEE WHAT POTENTIAL THERE WAS FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OUT OF THOSE RESOURCES.
THEY STARTED WORK ON THE APPLE CHIP PROJECTS A YEAR BEFORE THEY BROUGHT IT TO US LAST FEBRUARY.
I THINK THAT OUR APPROACH IN GENERAL IS TO START A NEW BUSINESS IS DIFFERENT THAN MOST ENTREPRENEURS.
I HAD BEEN IN BUSINESS BEFORE AND KNEW THAT RATHER THAN STARTING AN ENTERPRISE AGAIN I WANTED TO REALLY LOOK AT WHAT MY PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS OR CRITERIA WERE FOR THE BUSINESS, AND LOOK AT BUSINESS DID YOU NOTICE THAT FIT THOSE CRITERIA.
RATHER THAN HAVING A PASSION FOR A SPECIFIC IDEA, AND DEVELOPING OUT OF THAT PASSION.
SPECIFIC GOALS FOR US WERE THE ABILITY TO, ONE, HAVE FUN.
TWO, TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND INFLUENCE COMMUNITY REGIONAL AND GLOBAL ISSUES AND CONCERNS THAT WE HAD, AND THREE, TO BE ABLE TO HAVE FLEXIBILITY AROUND THE HOURS THAT WE WORK, AND A GREAT JOKE ABOUT THAT, BECAUSE EVERYBODY SAYS YOU WORK FOR YOURSELF, AND YOU ARE ABLE TO CHOOSE YOUR HOURS, WHICH ARE 24 HOURS A DAY.
>> WHAT WAS THAT, THAT MARK HEARD ABOUT MAKING IT OUT TO THE BANK?
>> HE WANTS THE APPRAISAL ADDRESSED TO THE BANK.
>> THE MATERIAL OF THE BUSINESS IS APPLE CHIPS.
AND THEY ARE SLICED, CRISPY APPLES, AND TAKES 15 MINUTES FROM THE TIME THAT YOU SLICE AN APPLE TO THE TIME THAT YOU HAVE A FINISHED CHIP.
IT'S A LIGHT, CRISPY CHIP.
AND IT'S MADE THROUGH A PROCESS THAT TOOK US OVER A YEAR TO DEVELOP.
AND WE PLAYED AROUND WITH ALL KINDS OF EQUIPMENT TO FINALLY COME UP WITH A PROCESS THAT REALLY WORK.
>> HOW IS IT GOING?
>> OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT, OUR ROLES HAVE BECOME PRETTY CLEARLY DEFINED, AND PETER HAS PRIMARILY WORKED ON PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.
HE'S BEEN THE PERSON DOWN HERE LIKE THE SCIENTIST.
TAKING VERY ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS, AND KEEPING CONTROL, AND METHODICALLY GOING THROUGH PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.
AND MY ROLE HAS BEEN THE ROLE OF REALLY PUTTING TOGETHER THE ENTIRE BUSINESS PLAN, AND BEING A PROBLEM SOLVER, AND WORKING ON EQUIPMENT AND PROBLEMS AND ISSUES, AND SUPPORTING PETER IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT.
WE HOPE TO BE UP AND RUNNING IN THE FALL WITH THE NEW CROP OF APPLES SO WE HAVE GOT JUST A TREMENDOUSLY LONG HAUL AHEAD OF US.
>> WE WILL CHECK IN AGAIN WITH SMITH AND POST NEXT WEEK TO SEE HOW THEY TRANSFORM THEIR DREAM INTO REALITY.

SIMON PIERCE HAS MADE SOME INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND EVERY DAY HUMAN BEHAVIOR.
>> WHEN PARENTS COME INTO THIS WITH THEIR CHILDREN, THE FIRST THING IT'S INCREDIBLE TO WATCH THEM.
THE FIRST THING THEY WILL TELL THEM, DO NOT TOUCH.

THE CHILDREN CAN TOUCH WHATEVER THEY LIKE, IF ON THE CHANCE THEY BREAK SOMETHING IT'S ON THE HOUSE.
THE CHILDREN NEVER BREAK ANYTHING.
THAT'S AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT I FEEL IS WHY THERE AREN'T MORE PEOPLE DOING ENTREPRENEURIAL TYPE OF THINGS OF IT'S THE WHOLE THING, NOT, DON'T TOUCH.
THE ONLY SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING I GOT FROM MY PARENTS WAS SELF-CONFIDENCE.
I BELIEVE IF YOU HAVE SELF-CONFIDENCE YOU CAN DO ANYTHING THAT YOU WANT TO DO.
BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH SELF-CONFIDENCE, IT NEVER OCCURS TO YOU THAT YOU CANNOT DO IT.
I LOVE STARTING PROJECTS, YOU KNOW.
I TELL MY WIFE, YOU KNOW, THIS YEAR WE WERE NOT STARTING ANY PROJECTS THIS YEAR.
WE WERE GOING TO MAKE MONEY AND BRING MONEY TO THE BOTTOM LINE, AND SHE SAYS, YOU WILL GO CRAZY.
YOU WILL BE MISERABLE TO LIVE WITH, AND UNLESS YOU HAVE ANOTHER PROJECT.
HERE WE DO A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT THINGS, THE MAIN BUSINESS IS THE GLASS-MAKING.
AND WE ALSO MAKE CERAMICS, POTTERY.
WE HAVE A RESTAURANT.
WE HAVE A HYDROELECTRIC PLANT WHERE WE MAKE OUR ELECTRICITY FROM THE WATER.
AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, YOU BUY SOMETHING FOR A DOLLAR.
YOU BETTER SELL IT FOR A DOLLAR IN A SENSE AT LEAST.
AND THAT TO ME IS WHAT REALLY WHAT BUSINESS IS ABOUT.
THAT SIMPLE.
BUSINESSES ARE DIVIDED INTO SIX MAIN PROFIT CENTERS.
AND I GET A TNL FOR EACH CENTER EACH MONTH AND IT'S ACCURATE.
WE CAN TELL IN THE RESTAURANT, IT'S A BOTTLE OF VINTAGE PORT WAS MISCOUNTED, YOU KNOW, IT'S THAT TYPE OF CONTROL.
TO ME THAT'S CRITICAL TO HAVE THAT.
AGAIN, THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY IF YOU CAN SEE IT ACCURATELY AND YOU KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE BUSINESS, YOU KNOW.
YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE MAKING OR LOSING MONEY.

PEOPLE YOU KNOW, HAVE TRIED TO GET ME TO PLAN AND ORGANIZE MY TIME.

THE ENTREPRENEUR DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THE AIRY, FAIRY PEOPLE OR PERSON THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THAT HE IS WITHOUT GOOD BUSINESS SENSE OR IS A GOOD MANAGEMENT SKILLS.
AND ON THE OTHER HAND,E, HE DOES NOT HAVE TO -- TO WEAR A TIRE AND BE T THE CONVENTIONAL.
I THINK THE TWO CAN WORK WELL TOGETHER AND MAKE AN EXCITING BUSINESS.
THE GLASS-BLOWING SHOP IS SPECIAL TO ME.
THE MOST SPECIAL AND ALWAYS WILL BE.
HOW IS IT GOING?
>> GOOD, HOW ARE YOU DOING?
>> GOOD.
>> IT HAS TO HAPPEN ON-TIME.
IT EITHER FLOWS OR DOESN'T.
IF THE PERSON IS LATE WITH THE BIT FOR THE FOOT THE GLASSES HAVE TO BE THROWN AWAY.
YOU CANNOT BE LATE.
THE THING I LOVE ABOUT THE GLASS IS YOU PUT ALL YOUR ENERGY INTO IT, AND ALL YOUR SKILL INTO IT, AND FOR A RELATIVELY SHORT THAT'S VERY MUCH HOW I APPROACH LIFE, I THINK, AND HOW I APPROACH BUSINESS, IS THE SAME THING.
I LIKE TO PUT A LOT INTO IT AND TRY AND MOVE ONTO THE IN THE --E NEXT THING.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THE QUALITY OF THE BUSINESS.
THE QUALITY OF WHAT WE DO.
THE BIG CHALLENGE HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOR ME NEVER TO COMPROMISE QUALITY FOR PROFIT.
IT SEEMS LIKE A IMPORTANTOUS -- IT SEEMS LIKEA POMPOUS THING.
IF I AM NOT HAVING FUN AND ENJOYING THIS, IT'S CRAZY, WHAT IS THE POINT OF IT ALL.
>> SO WE BEGAN OUR ADVENTURE.
WE MET ENTERPRISING MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE TRANSFORMED IDEAS INTO BUSINESS, AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEMSELVES AND OTHERS.
TAPPING THE FIRE THAT EXIST THIS IS ALL OF US, AND SEEING OPPORTUNITIES IS JUST THE BEGINNING, AND NEXT WEEK WE WILL LOOK AT THE HOW AND WHY OF STARTING A BUSINESS.
AND YOU WILL SEE FOR AN ENTREPRENEUR THERE IS NO ONE RIGHT WAY.
