I am so thrilled to be here to honor you and induct you into the Hall of Fame.

Thank you for asking for me.

I mean, Bonnie.

There just aren't word really to adequately describe, just how pleased and how overwhe I actually a that you're here to do this for You know, you know, you're my he And you know that you have bee since I was a really young girl.

And, I'm not alone.

Oh, and if there's a lot of wom there that that idolize you and they can do big things because o I think having you here to do th with me is just as probably one of the most important things that's happened to me in my adul and I'm really grateful.

I'm so glad that you feel that w Thank you.

It makes me feel I was alread so honored to have Mavis induct And you know, we love ACL and f many reasons that they put us on This show and for so many of the that we love that don't get mainstream attention.

Yeah.

But, I have been absolutely a huge fan of yours as well since you first came out and and I mean, came out as an artis Yeah.

but I just that there's nobody with your v and the fact that you can write and run your ban and you do your wonderful Lookin Foundation, great work with soci And we are so sisterly in our ef to make things better.

And the taste in musi and our love for our fellow arti And so I feel real kinship with And if I have been in any way i to you, it makes me very proud.

Hugely.

And and you've been such a good you know, it's it's true.

We have checked in with each ot during hard times and we've shar some of our beliefs and frustrat you know, that's been like such such a kind of mind blowing tran to go from fan to, to friend.

But you make it really eas because you're a very laid back Well, and we have both have a good sense of humor.

Yeah.

And we both have a good sens and we're really better than min Well, there's there's one thing that we really do shar that I'm also really proud of is that we are women, business women as well.

And we lead a band of, yeah, many men sometimes.

So yeah, in a busines that can be really, not crushing And it wasn't crushing for my ti because I was a musicia that played the guitar pretty we So I got a respect earl on, and I wasn't going to take a you know what, from anybody.

And I just think it's grea that this new generation, includ takes, takes control of their bu and yeah, gets what they want and doesn't have to be pushed around.

Yeah.

And we know we can because.

Because you do it.

But also like you're I've never talked to you about this before.

But your legacy, lik your reputation precedes you lik before you meet Bonnie Raitt, y Bonnie Raitt knows everybody's n Bonnie Raitt knows every player that she's ever played with.

She knows everybody on the crew.

Bonnie Raitt sleeps in the botto bunk in the bus.

Bonnie Raitt has a way, like with remembering, people and and forming like, relationsh that that sort of lasts.

And I remember years before I met you, maybe, maybe even a decade or more bef I met you, thinking if there's o I want people to talk about m the way they talk about Bonnie R Oh, I've all really always felt you know?

True.

Like, truly.

You haven't hear all the other kinds of stories.

I heard some things.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Well, that makes you who you are You know, we are the sum total the shadow sides and the goofy s Yeah.

Regretful sides and the wonderfu So I mean, it's wonderful.

I had I grew up with brothers a and I was never really related to the girly girl kind of thing.

And I didn't want to do the wif and mother thing, and to be able to be in a community of wome musicians and singer songwriters that are also just holding thei in terms of their personal life, how they direct their business well as just so great to be in t Yeah, to to know that we can ju carve our own path and not have into any traditional, female rol or musician role models.

And we're pretty eclectic musically as well, which is anot I really admire you for.

And as a singer, I mean I just all the things you feel a and the fact that you write you and, and your range as a writer and your growth as a woman and a growth as a son is just incredibly admirable.

And I'm I couldn't be happier that this is the time in your l that we can give you this honor.

Because this is kind of my first honor like this.

Like I've never had something qu weighty.

Yeah.

I don't think happened, to me ye so I'm, like, really nervous.

I'm really excited.

Well and I don't know quite how to ta It's your community.

It's our community honoring you.

And that's why it means so much.

I mean, it meant so much to me, too.

Did it?

This is great because it's.

I got to induct Sheryl.

I know and it was a great speech too.

O And I hope youre going to like Oh, I can't believe you have a s I hope theyll have to do all yo Yeah, I know exactly.

Yeah.

I mean, there's a chance, can I ask you a couple of questi I'm not trying to be an intervie Yeah, I feel like you have to a now because there's cameras on.

Is it about guys?

No.

Yeah, but I do have some questio about that.

Yeah.

so if there is, like, another wo we all know who women in particular that we lov musically that we we and we talk a little bit about some of your Etta James and Aretha and stuff But was there like a woman that to, like, I look to you where you're like, more than just the music.

You're like that's how I want people to talk That's wha I want people to think about me.

That's what I want my career to Well, yeah, I think when I think I mean, my first hero for combining music and activism and just incredibly.

Undeniabl artistically excellent was Joan She was.

The reason I started playing the was that first album of hers when I was 11, and she was Scott and Mexican and a Quaker.

So I went.

Oh, Joan Baez was a Quaker too?

Yeah, yeah, that's so that was a That actually tracks.

I'm part So I just thought you know, wow, this is my hero.

Not just because of that but as a young girl, you know, there was a folk craze going th colleges in the early 60s, late And she was the queen.

And so like what Beyonce is for young w and you are in many ways for a lot of generations.

And I am in some ways from my part of the culture.

Joan Baez was the first one and then I always loved, I love Shirley MacLaine for her feistin and political activism.

And yeah, and I love Jane Fonda, who's my dear friend.

So you know.

Those are really good ones.

Yeah, I'd have to say those are that stood out in my life.

Yeah.

As like, more than just music.

Music too, but also, like, that' That's a path I want to be on.

Yeah, yeah.

And, the Indigo Girls.

Oh of cou Yeah.

And, you know, the Indigo Girls from the Honor where - that you guys did that t but yeah, when I first got sign and I was, like, in my early 20s both of them gave me their phone and took me under their wing, and they said they don't They're not big on giving advice You know, like, if you call the and you ask them advice, they'll But they're not know-it-alls.

Li Good for them.

I'd like them to just because I need a lot of he But no, like, I've called the and asked them, some big questio and they have just beautiful mor I agree, I think they're great and what voices too.

Yeah that's totally natural that that would be.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And I saw them on Au City Limits as well.

Oh my gosh.

More than once.

I get turned on to so many peopl through this show.

It's just really astonishing.

Yeah.

Me too.

Yeah.

I was telling you when we were t our picture that Austin City li you know, it was like long form.

You could see a band get comfort enough to come off the rails just a little bit.

Or an artist get comfortable.

And it wasn't just about like th It's like maybe speaking in between the songs and you'r getting a hint of their personal And yeah, it was like I knew about I knew what Austin because of Austin City Limits.

Yeah, in.

Many ways I did too, y I mean, it was really incredible that the place it hold and will still hold, regardless the corporation for Public Broad can support it anymore.

I mean, we're going to get throu but public TV shows like Austin Limits are not going anywhere.

Yeah.

And you know, you don't.

It doesn' cut away to a carpet commercial.

So and then no, it doesnt.

but that accessibility of of it and, and PBS is something I think about all the time, you because I, I grew up really poor without ac to a lot of things, you know, even a ride to a city big enoug to have a concert, let alone a c Wow.

So, yeah, things like Austin City Limits, they can reach everybody in every living room.

That's that's a profound thing.

And and it was free.

Free.

Yeah.

For everybody.

And, you know, let's just tal about our mutual love for John P also sign.

In front of us.

And I want you to explai why you chose the two songs that for us to do together tonight.

Well, I met John before I met yo And about a day after I met John he invited me to sing “Angel From Montgomery.” Oh, nice.

And I just kept remember thinki like, oh, man, I'm in Bonnie's h Like, this is like Bonnies hou So I was like, I'm going to sing “Angel From Montgomery” with John Prine.

And I so associated him with you in this really soulful way.

And, I also got to sing tha kind of dirty song with him, you Oh, yeah.

Yeah, in Hawaii in that one.

No, the, “she don't like her egg “she's my baby” “I'm her honey.” Yeah, exactly.

We could do that one together.

I would love to do that next tim I mean, a song that's just a lit not what somebody would expect i I chose to do, to ask you if you would be so kind as to do “Love Me Like a Man” with me.

Rockin choice, Brandi.

I never would have expected that in a million years.

And the minute I looked at your that was it.

Yeah.

The singing that song with yo in that context is just heaven.

And listening to your guitar pla it's like I told you, I saw you do this on Austin City Limits.

That's the one.

The first one th I searched out.

Yeah, well, I had to go shed i because I haven't been doing it on this tou that we just finished the first and we were doing a couple of ot songs.

I want a man, I better go, I love that.

I better go.

She's got that - holding the bar I better get better, not choke o And then we played it at the Go where it was like 42 degrees on Yeah.

And I was packed like a michelin with puffy jackets.

Yes.

And I was going, come on, girl it's for my fingers, were like f But you nailed it.

I love the guitar on it because so unapologetically blues and ac and it just really feels like ho in a way.
