Why can't penguins fly? Asks Kai from California.
Penguins! They're adorable, they waddle, and they look like they're wearing tiny tuxedos. But have you ever noticed something a little off about those flappy little wings? Every other bird on the planet uses their wings to take to the skies — so why can't penguins do the same? Turns out, penguins aren't missing out on flying at all... they just do it somewhere a little more unexpected.

They're adorable.
They waddle.
They look like they're wearing little tuxedos.
They're great swimmers.
But those wings, let me tell you, they aren't for flying Why can't penguins fly?
Penguins come in all different shapes and sizes.
The smallest penguin species, the little penguin, is only about 12 inches tall.
Hey, buddy.
While the emperor penguin can grow over four feet.
Hey.
Whoa.
But one trait they all share is that they don't spend any time in the sky.
They fly underwater instead.
Penguin wings are so stiff they can't even bend them.
But penguins use these short, stiff wings as flippers, making them super fast swimmers, which is a good thing because penguins spend three-quarters of their lives underwater.
You might also know that some penguins live in really cold climates.
Unlike other birds who need to stay light to fly through the air, penguins get to keep big fat reserves that help them stay warm in frigid weather.
Nice.
