Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(gentle music) - I'm Kennedi Clifton, I'm 18.
And I'm from Jackson, Michigan.
I got involved in the Youth Arts Alliance and my art project was a maker space and it was a vinyl store.
(upbeat music) (indistinct chattering) I wanted it to be a step into my mind to be like, oh, who is Kennedy?
And then look at it and be like, oh, she loves the aesthetic of this type of music.
I kind of made it because when my grandpa passed, all of his vinyls were passed to me.
And my mom also kind of would show me like music from her era.
And the relationship with my mom is so important to me, because she's never given up on me.
She's always that person that's like, hey, yeah we are going through something, but we're gonna get through it.
(gentle music) If my grandpa was here to see it, I know he would be very proud of me.
I know that he would be very, very excited to see my art piece.
And I know he would be very proud.
(gentle music) I just love music and I always, always will.
I enjoy listening to music, because it gives me a free sensation.
It makes me feel like I can kind of escape from the reality of life.
(gentle music) I have depression and it got in the way of school.
It got in the way of me having a job.
It got in the way of me having friends.
Growing up, it was really hard.
I had dropped out of school my freshman year and then I went back to school last year and I did a whole 360.
I started working on my mental health, my principal, he calls me a success story.
Seeing my artwork on display, I get this thrill where it's like, hey, I did this.
What else can I accomplish?
What else can I do?
My main message to people my age and especially the ones that deal with mental health, is it's a real thing for us and it's serious, but we're gonna succeed and we're not gonna let it fail us.
