Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - I am Joycelyn Winchester, and I am 24 years old.
I am from Ypsilanti, Michigan.
I got involved with the Youth Arts Alliance from my program called Our House.
They reached out to me and I told them, "Sure, I'll be a part of the program."
- This is gorgeous!
- It's really cool.
- Thank you.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you.
Being able to work on this art project helped my mental health because it gave me something to be focused on, and it gave me something to look forward to.
- I love the bags.
- Oh, thank you.
I created a Nike shoe store because I collect shoes and throughout college, I worked at shoe stores to be able to make ends meet.
(slow paced music) Growing up I experienced chronic homelessness, and this started at the age of 13 to when I graduated high school, which was 18.
I felt very lost and confused.
I felt like I wasn't good enough to be the person I am today.
My life changed because I had a teacher who really helped me get through my experience of being homeless and helped me graduate high school, to be able to move on to college.
Having someone believe in me like that was very empowering.
And being able to see my artwork on display was amazing, knowing that I put so much hard work into it.
It was very empowering.
I wanna send a message to all the people who experience homelessness that, you can be anything you wanna be.
And I wanna be a school social worker because I wanna be able to work with teenagers who have been through what I've been through.
I was able to persevere because I knew that life was not meant for me, and I knew I had a purpose and I just needed to find it.
(slow paced music continues)
