Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(bright music) - I'm Gracie Jersey and I'm 17.
I'm from Jackson, Michigan.
- This one's your piece?
- Yeah.
- The ultimate goal of Youth Arts Alliance is building skill and practice in different art forms.
- When I was first told about this project, I actually didn't wanna to do it.
And then I started the class and I absolutely loved it.
- This workshop being the maker space like left you wanting to do more?
- Yeah.
- Within one workshop, Gracie was a leader, created her own space and it's remarkable to me how much levity she carries in the world going through some really hard experiences.
- When I was so focused into getting my art project done, I wasn't thinking about all of the things that were going on, you know in my life.
In 2017, my mom passed away.
And then in 2020, I was in a car accident and I broke my back in three different places.
I had to relearn how to walk, seventh, eighth, ninth grade, I was not going to school.
I was not getting good grades.
I was arguing with everybody and I wouldn't have made it without my principal, Mr. Baumb, my dad, my dad, I have the best dad.
I feel like if it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't have been graduated by now.
And I wouldn't, I wouldn't have calmed all of my anger down without, without them.
Completing the movie theater makes me feel like, like I did it.
And I feel like I haven't been able to say that a lot.
I just want people to know that you can do it and you can get through it, whatever you're going through, eventually it gets better.
